Dr. Mark Ryan

MBBS, RANZCP, BCN -Head Psychiatrist

Mark Ryan is a psychiatrist with an extensive background in consultation-liaison psychiatry, precision medicine and neuromodulation. He has served as Clinical Lecturer at both Sydney University and the University of NSW, and worked at major hospitals across NSW. His approach goes beyond diagnostic labels and symptom-based treatments in psychiatry. Diagnostic labels are summary descriptive socio-cultural, ‘fuzzy’ constructs that often fail to capture the complexity of an individual's state with significant symptom overlap across categories and with typically low inter-rater reliability. The patient is not the diagnosis, which is after all an abstract ‘human kind', and not a ’thing’. Instead, he orientates to a systems-based, allostatic perspective—one that recognises symptoms as signals of an organism’s allostatic response to chronic stress rather than as a manifestation of a ‘spanner in the works” to be eliminated.

Dr. Ryan’s approach incorporates comprehensive, individualised assessments that transcend categorical diagnoses to consider underlying interacting physiological, metabolic, psychological, behavioural and sociocultural and political and other contextual factors. These contextual factors are significant determinants of health/illhealth. This assessment enables greater precision, consideration of factors additional to symptoms and a more informed and comprehensive and personalised assessment and understanding incorporating more than the treatment guidelines that are derived from group averages and which necessarily require translation to each individual patient.

His work aligns with contemporary shifts in psychiatric thought, incorporating systems medicine, neuroscience, chronic stress physiology, allostatic adjustments and modification of the predictive model to restore flexibility and adaptive capacity in patients. His approach ultimately aims to facilitate self-regulation and healing, rather than only attenuating/alleviating symptoms.

A more detailed summary of his approach can be found here.
